The Colby Community College men's basketball team enters the opening week of KJCCC action at 2–4 overall, looking to regroup after a challenging weekend in Great Bend. The Trojans return home Wednesday (Nov. 19) for a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Independence before traveling to Liberal on Saturday (Nov. 22) to face Seward County.
Through six games, Colby is scoring at a strong clip, averaging 84.3 points per game while shooting 43.8 percent from the field. Sophomore guard D.J. Cason continues to set the tone offensively, leading the team with 14.5 points per game and a team-best 3.3 assists. Freshman standout Gianna Asimakopoulos has also made an early impact, adding 11.0 points per contest. Nana Keutcha anchors the Trojans on the glass, with both Gabe Njenga and Asimakopoulos contributing more than four rebounds per game to keep Colby competitive inside.
Njenga delivered one of his strongest weekends of the season in Great Bend, scoring in double figures in both games, including a 20-point performance on 61.5 percent shooting against NOC–Enid on Saturday (Nov. 15). Owen Reece has also been a valuable spark off the bench. The freshman erupted for 19 points in the home matchup against Lamar (Nov. 11) and added a combined 15 points across two games this past weekend, bringing his season average to 9.8 points per game.
Independence enters Wednesday's contest at 2–3, coming off a win over Metropolitan Community College in Kansas City. The Pirates boast an explosive offensive attack, averaging 91.2 points per game while shooting nearly 50 percent from the floor. Four players average double figures, led by sophomore David Wilson at 21.2 points per game. Sterling Knox provides efficient scoring at 16.8 points per game on 62 percent shooting while also leading the squad with 5.0 assists. Forward Lonnie Bass Jr. controls the interior, averaging 9.8 rebounds in just 18 minutes per game.
Seward County opened the year with five straight wins before falling to New Mexico Junior College in their most recent outing. The Saints average 81.8 points per game and shoot 45 percent from the field while pulling down more than 40 rebounds per contest. Offensively, they feature two double-figure scorers, highlighted by Lyna Brooks Jr., who leads the team at 12.8 points per game.
Both matchups project to be tightly contested, and despite their recent skid, the Trojans remain confident in their ability to compete. Colby will look to set the tone early as conference play begins.
