COLBY, Kan. — The No. 6 Colby Community College Trojans opened its home and conference schedule in style Wednesday (Sept. 3) night, defeating Garden City in straight sets, 3-0.
The Broncbusters jumped out quickly in the first set, leading 11-5 before the Trojans began to settle in. A service ace from Chiara Binda and a kill from Karlotta Kattai sparked momentum, followed by an ace from Isadora Carrareto that trimmed the deficit to 10-15. From there, Colby's front line took control, with Binda and Amanda Caputi combining for a block to keep the Trojans within striking distance.
Behind a cross-court kill from Lena Mihaljica and two consecutive service aces, Colby closed the gap to just one point at 17-16. Kattai added another kill, and Ella Dridi hammered down a powerful back-row attack to tie the set at 19. Carrareto then delivered a key kill from the middle, and the Trojans surged ahead on a 6-0 run before sealing the set 25-23.
With the energy of the home crowd behind them, Colby dominated the next two sets, winning both by double digits (25-13, 25-13). The balanced attack, combined with aggressive serving and strong net play, left little doubt as the Trojans secured their first conference win of the season at home.
The Trojans improved to 7-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Garden City dropped to 2-7 and 0-1 in the league. Colby will look to carry the momentum into its next matchup, hosting Cloud County on Saturday (Sept. 6) at 2 p.m. inside the Colby Event Center.
