COLBY, Kan. - The Colby Trojans women's basketball team delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday (Feb. 14), using a dominant second-half effort and a stifling defensive performance to defeat previously ranked Coffeyville, 65–46, in a key conference matchup.
The contest opened with strong energy on both ends as the teams traded baskets through a physical first quarter. Easha Potts provided an early spark for the Trojans with two interior scores, while Paishintz Booker added a transition basket to keep the offense flowing. Coffeyville briefly claimed a 10–9 lead midway through the period, but Colby responded immediately when Adrian Neal came off the bench and connected on a three-pointer to swing momentum back in favor of the Trojans. With under a minute remaining in the opening quarter, Dessirae Ulmer knocked down a mid-range jumper to give the Trojans a 16–15 advantage heading into the second.
Defense set the tone in the second quarter as Colby tightened its pressure and limited Coffeyville's offensive opportunities. A three-pointer from Jera Kruleski extended the Trojans' lead to 21–15 early in the period before Coffeyville answered with a triple from Mahogany Butler. From that point forward, the Trojans dictated the pace, forcing contested shots and controlling the glass on the defensive end. Colby held Coffeyville to just five points in the quarter and carried a 25–20 lead into halftime behind a dominant defensive effort.
The Trojans created separation immediately after the break with a decisive scoring run in the third quarter. Amisha Russell opened the half with a three-pointer to ignite the offense, and Ulmer followed with a strong finish down low. Colby continued to build momentum with contributions throughout the lineup, including another bucket from Potts, Piri Lewis and a physical finish from Regina Pasti.
Ulmer later scored four consecutive points during the stretch as the Trojans pushed the lead into double digits. Pasti added another tough finish inside to cap an explosive run, and Colby outscored Coffeyville 21–16 in the period to take firm control of the contest entering the fourth quarter.
Ulmer delivered the decisive blow in the final period, scoring eight points in the first five minutes while consistently converting around the basket. Her offensive surge extended the Trojans' lead to as many as 22 points, while Colby's defense continued to limit Coffeyville's opportunities. The Trojans maintained control down the stretch and closed out the 65–46 victory.
Ulmer led all scorers with 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting while adding six rebounds. Potts anchored the defensive effort with eight rebounds and five blocked shots, protecting the rim throughout the contest. Lewis directed the offense with eight assists, while Kruleski and Russell each provided key perimeter scoring that helped fuel critical runs.
As a team, the Trojans shot 45.6 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range while holding Coffeyville to 34.7 percent shooting and just 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. Colby controlled the glass with a 32–25 rebounding advantage, forced 14 turnovers, and converted those opportunities into 15 points. The Trojans also held advantages in points in the paint and bench production while limiting Coffeyville to 46 total points.
The Trojans remained sixth in the conference standings but gained valuable ground on fourth-place Coffeyville in the race for positioning. Colby now turns its attention to another major test Wednesday (Feb. 18), traveling to face third-place Hutchinson Community College, which enters the matchup with a record of 21–5 (16–4 KJCCC). The contest presents another critical opportunity for the Trojans to build momentum and continue climbing the conference standings.
