After a crazy week of conference play, the Colby Trojans women's basketball team returns to action Saturday (Feb. 14) with a key Jayhawk Conference matchup against Coffeyville. The Trojans enter the contest following an early-week bye, giving them additional preparation time for their lone game of the week.
Colby enters the matchup following an eventful stretch that highlighted the team's competitiveness and growth in conference play. The Trojans delivered one of their biggest wins of the season at home, knocking off No. 3 ranked Dodge City Community College before falling on the road later in the week to Cloud County Community College.
Sophomore forward Dessirae Ulmer continues to power the Trojans offensively. Ulmer leads the team in scoring at 14.2 points per game and delivered a season-defining performance with a 33-point eruption in the upset win over Dodge City. She also controls the glass for Colby, pacing the team with 7.4 rebounds per contest. Olivia Hultgren has provided steady production throughout the season, averaging 10.3 points per game while contributing two assists per outing. Meanwhile, point guard Piri Lewis has elevated her play in the second half of conference competition. Lewis leads the Trojans with 3.6 assists per game and adds 3.7 rebounds per contest, helping stabilize the backcourt.
Coffeyville enters the matchup with a 19–6 (13–6 KJCCC) record. Earlier this season, the Red Ravens defeated the Trojans 72–55 in their previous meeting when Coffeyville was ranked No. 25 nationally.
The Red Ravens feature a balanced offensive attack led by Esme Smith and Aubrey Hishaw, who both average double figures in scoring. Smith also anchors the interior presence, leading Coffeyville with 9.2 rebounds per game. The team's playmaking responsibilities are shared by Karliey Parker and Hallie Kitchen, who each average nearly four assists per game.
With the conference standings tightening down the stretch, Saturday's contest carries significant postseason implications. Coffeyville currently sits fourth in the Jayhawk Conference standings, while Colby holds the sixth position and looks to climb the rankings heading into the final weeks of the regular season.
Following the earlier loss to the Red Ravens, the Trojans will aim to defend their home floor and secure a crucial conference victory as they continue their push toward postseason positioning. Come out and support the ladies at 1 PM tomorrow (Feb. 14) in te Colby Event Center and wear your pink.
