COLBY, Kan. - The Colby Trojans men's basketball team delivered its most complete performance of the season Saturday (Feb. 28), rolling past Garden City 80-60 inside the Colby Event Center to officially clinch a Region 6 playoff berth.
In a game filled with momentum swings and highlight-reel dunks the Trojans combined efficiency, toughness and defensive intensity to secure the postseason spot in front of the home crowd.
Colby set the tone immediately, opening the contest on a 7-2 run in the first two minutes and forcing Garden City to take a quick timeout. The Broncbusters answered quickly as Jordon Nevill knocked down a three-pointer to tie the game at seven and followed with another triple during a stretch of back-to-back scoring possessions to give Garden City the early edge.
After a bucket from D.J. Cason momentarily stopped the surge, a Zaire Lott three-pointer and a Devonte Reed transition score pushed the Broncbusters in front by seven. But the Trojans responded with energy plays that changed the feel of the game. Nana Keutcha ignited the crowd with a powerful dunk, and moments later Gabe Njenga followed with one of his own. The back-to-back slams sparked an 8-0 Colby run midway through the half as the Trojans regained the lead with 10 minutes remaining before the break.
Garden City countered again with two straight three-pointers to go back up six, but Njenga connected with Keutcha on a perfectly timed lob to trim the deficit to four. After a brief scoring lull, Nevill buried yet another three to stretch the Broncbuster lead to seven, and a Dasean Lewis three pushed the margin to double digits.
Colby answered with its best stretch of the half. Keutcha scored on consecutive interior touches, Giannis Asimakopoulos came up with a key steal that led to a transition bucket, and Njenga threw down another dunk off a feed from Aliou Diallo. Cason then drilled a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 32-32. Diallo attacked the rim to give the Trojans the lead with under two minutes remaining, and after Lewis responded with another triple, Diallo and Njenga scored on back-to-back possessions to send Colby into halftime with a 38-37 advantage.
The Trojans seized control for good in the opening minutes of the second half. Cason and Diallo combined to score Colby's first eight points after the break, setting the tone offensively. Njenga added yet another emphatic dunk as the Trojans began to separate. Garden City quickly found itself in foul trouble, and Colby capitalized at the free-throw line, steadily building a double-digit lead within the first seven minutes of the half.
Colby outscored Garden City 42-23 over the final 20 minutes and shot an impressive 52.7 percent (29-of-55) from the field for the game. The Trojans dominated inside, piling up 46 points in the paint while limiting the Broncbusters to just 14 interior points. Garden City, which attempted 43 three-pointers, shot 35.4 percent overall (23-of-65) and was held to 60 points, its lowest scoring output of the season after entering the night having not been held under 76 all year.
Diallo led the way with 24 points, going 7-of-16 from the floor and a perfect 10-of-10 from the free-throw line while adding six rebounds and four assists. Cason poured in 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting, including five three-pointers and four assists. Njenga was nearly flawless, finishing with 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting and delivering multiple momentum-shifting dunks. Keutcha added a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to anchor the interior effort.
Colby finished with 13 assists, forced 18 Garden City turnovers and converted those into 19 points. The Trojans also shot 77.3 percent from the line, continuing to extend the lead late by converting in the bonus.
With the victory, Colby punched its ticket to the Region 6 postseason. The Trojans now turn their focus to a pivotal conference matchup with No. 19 Butler Community College, which enters the week 20-9 (16-7 KJCCC) and tied atop the league standings, as Colby looks to carry its momentum into the final game of the regular season Wednesday (March 4) at 7:30 p.m.
