The Colby Trojans men's basketball faced a challenging week, beginning with a tough home loss to Barton before falling at Cowley County.
The Trojans battled hard but ultimately fell to Barton 84-56 on Wednesday (Jan. 28). Barton established early dominance, leveraging their outside shooting and rebounding to set the tone. The Cougars led 43-23 at halftime, fueled by Aris Rodriguez's energetic play, finishing with 24 points and showcasing his scoring versatility throughout the game. Noah Williams added 9 points, while Sebastian Muchitsch contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds.
Colby struggled with turnovers and shooting inconsistencies in the first half, which prevented them from closing the gap. Despite their efforts, Barton maintained their offensive rhythm in the second half, shooting 41.9% from the floor and nearly 30% from three-point range. They also capitalized on turnovers, outscoring the Trojans 13-6 in points off turnovers and outrebounding Colby 43-29.
Standouts for Barton included Rodriguez, who led all scorers with 24 points, and Muchitsch, providing a strong inside presence. For the Trojans, Owen Reece led with 12 points in just 17 minutes, showcasing his offensive spark. Nana Keutcha added 11 points and 5 rebounds, while Aliou Diallo contributed 12 points, including three three-pointers.
The Trojans then hit the road for a rematch against Cowley County, but came up just short, falling 83-66. Cowley took control early, leading 42-29 at halftime by shooting an impressive 55.7% from the field and converting half of their 16 three-point attempts. Their ball movement was sharp, dishing out 16 assists, more than double Colby's total.
Colby struggled to find offensive rhythm early on, shooting 47.8% from the floor and 50% from three. Turnovers again hindered their efforts, with 21 giveaways leading to 25 points for Cowley. Despite their hustle, the Trojans couldn't match Cowley's energy or rebounding, finishing with 22 boards to Cowley's 27.
Offensively, Aliou Diallo led the way with 20 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added four assists. D.J. Cason chipped in 13 points and four rebounds, while Giannis Asimakopoulos came off the bench hot, finishing 6-for-7 from the field and netting 15 points, along with three steals. Cowley's balanced attack was led by Roman Miller, who scored 16 points, and Aven Mboule, who added 15 off the bench.
The Trojans will now regroup and prepare for their next challenge on Wednesday (Feb. 4), against No. 19 Dodge City at the Colby Event Center.
