Michael Ruiz was named the inaugural Head Women’s Wrestling Coach at Colby Community College, beginning his tenure as the Trojans prepare to launch the program for competition in Fall 2025. Ruiz brings a wealth of coaching experience across multiple levels, including high school and collegiate wrestling, combined with a strong commitment to athlete development both on and off the mat.

A native of Porterville, California, Ruiz excelled as a collegiate wrestler at West Hills Community College, earning California Junior College All-American honors with a third-place finish at the state tournament. He continued his competitive career at the University of Providence, where he became a two-time NAIA All-American, placing fourth and second nationally.

Ruiz began his coaching career at Porterville High School, serving as the assistant girls’ wrestling coach for three years. During his tenure, he helped cultivate a competitive program that produced successful athletes at local, regional, and state levels, many of whom continued their wrestling careers in college.

Most recently, Ruiz was an Assistant Wrestling Coach at Benedictine College and served as a Resident Director on campus in Atchison, Kansas. His coaching philosophy centers on fostering both athletic excellence and personal growth, helping student-athletes build strong foundations for success.

“I’m honored to join the Colby Community College family and lead this historic moment for the women’s wrestling program,” Ruiz said. “I look forward to recruiting and mentoring the first group of student-athletes who will lay the foundation for this program. There’s something special about being part of the beginning of a legacy.”

Colby Community College is excited to expand its wrestling offerings and provide new opportunities for women athletes to compete at the collegiate level. With Ruiz at the helm, the program aims to build a lasting tradition of success and growth in women’s wrestling.
