No. 7 Women’s Wrestling Crowns Two Champions, Adds Multiple Placers in Nebraska
The Trojans women’s wrestling team delivered a strong performance at the York Open tournament, highlighted by two individual championships and multiple podium finishes across several weight classes.
York, NEB. – The Trojans women's wrestling team delivered a strong performance at the York College Open Saturday (Jan. 17), highlighted by two individual championships and multiple podium finishes across several weight classes.
At 207 pounds, Catherine Dutton delivered a dominant performance on her way to the championship title. Dutton opened the tournament with a 58-second fall and followed with back-to-back pins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. In the championship match, Dutton capped her run with a decisive 10-0 technical fall, defeating the No. 13-ranked wrestler in the NAIA, showcasing her elite positioning and control throughout the bracket.
Another title came at 138 pounds, where Destiny Gonzalez put together a flawless tournament. Gonzalez began with a commanding 10-2 decision before recording three consecutive falls to claim first place. Her run included pins over the No. 2 and No. 6 ranked NJCAA opponents at 138 pounds, all while competing in the amateur division.
At 160 pounds, Kaylen McAtee battled back after a semifinal setback to earn a third-place finish. McAtee totaled four falls on the day, including victories in the consolation semifinals and third-place match, highlighting her resilience and finishing ability. Emma Parker secured a fifth-place finish at 131 pounds. After advancing to the semifinals, Parker closed her tournament strong with a pin in the fifth-place match.
Also at 160 pounds, Atavia Cain gained valuable experience, opening with a decision victory before adding a technical fall in the consolation rounds against strong competition. At 103 pounds, Cristina Palacio Martinez faced a challenging bracket, falling in both championship and consolation action while gaining experience against nationally competitive opponents.
Competing unattached at 110 pounds, Aspen Sharpe earned a second-place finish, highlighted by a pin over the No. 8 ranked NJCAA opponent at 110 pounds. Also competing unattahced was Coach Anastasia Hardin, who finished third in 160 pounds.
The Trojans will next turn their attention to the NJCAA National Duals in Utah, set for Saturday (Jan. 24).
