Volleyball Trio Earn Conference Honors

Three Colby Community College volleyball players earned conference recognition for helping their team navigate a tough road schedule in week eight of the season. Julie Archer, Kyndal Bacon and Nina Gorgijevska are the Jayhawk Conference athletes of the week after leading the Trojans to a 4-1 record.

Taking on three nationally ranked teams at the DI and DII levels, 16th-ranked CCC had a big conference win over Hutchinson. The Trojans then picked up wins over Iowa Lakes, Johnson County and Central Community College at a tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The lone loss came at the hands of No. 15 New Mexico Military Institute.

Archer averaged 3.35 kills per set and tallied 67 kills during the week.  She also had three double-doubles. Defensively, the sophomore from Andale added 50 digs, averaging 2.5 digs per set to go along with 17 blocks.

Bacon continued to lead the Trojan offense and made a big impact defensively. She compiled 184 assists, totaling 10.22 per set.  On defense, she added 20 blocks and 62 digs. It marks the third time this season the Newton freshman has received weekly recognition.

Gorgijevska had another stellar week in the back row with 103 digs, averaging 5.15 per set. On 83 reception attempts, the sophomore from Potsdam, Germany, had only three errors. Gorgijevska was also the defensive player of the week in week one.

The Trojans now hold an overall record of 23-2 and 11-1 in the conference. After road games at Barton and Butler community colleges this week, they return to the Community Building Oct. 24 for a 6:30 p.m. showdown with No. 8 Seward County.
