The Colby men's wrestling team faced a demanding stretch of KJCCC conference competition, competing in two tri-duals that tested the Trojans squad.
Colby opened conference action in a tri-dual featuring No. 9 Pratt Community College and Neosho County Community College on Thursday (Jan. 21). In the first dual of the night, the Trojans ran into a strong Pratt lineup and fell 44–9. Colby's highlights came at 133 and 141 pounds, where Talon Suttles earned a hard-fought 14–12 decision over Gabe Sherrell, and Sebastian Rodriguez delivered a pin at 2:50 against Jameal Agnew. Pratt capitalized on multiple falls and bonus-point victories to pull away and secure the dual.
The Trojans showed immediate resilience in the second dual of the evening, bouncing back with a 27–22 victory over Neosho County. Colby picked up six wins, including four by fall. Jovanny Arellanes (157) and Cah'mari Johnson (184) both recorded pins to shift momentum, while Gunner Owens (174) earned a win by forfeit and Robert Tatum (285) added a crucial victory by fall. Suttles continued his strong night with a 16–11 decision at 133 pounds, helping seal the conference win.
Colby then hosted its first home conference tri-dual of the season, welcoming Cloud County and Barton Thursday (Jan. 28).
The Trojans opened the night against Cloud County but came up short in a 29–17 decision. Colby earned wins at 184 and 165 pounds, with Kash Alley posting a 6–0 decision and Cah'mari Johnson adding an 8–4 victory. Luis Vasquez contributed six team points at 125 pounds via injury default. Despite those efforts, Cloud County used key bonus-point wins through the middle of the lineup to gain separation and take the dual.
Colby closed the tri-dual in emphatic fashion, rolling past Barton Community College 38–16. The Trojans won seven of the ten bouts, including four by fall. Luis Vasquez set the tone with a pin at 125 pounds, followed by first-period falls from Kevaun Jones at heavyweight and Jovanny Arellanes at 157. Talon Suttles added a dominant technical fall at 133, while Sebastian Rodriguez delivered a clutch sudden-victory decision at 141 to keep momentum firmly on Colby's side.
Across the two tri-duals, the Trojans showed growth against various top conference wrestlers. The Trojans will return to action this Thursday (Feb. 5) against ranked Fort Hays Tech NW.
