Men's Wrestling Go 2-2 at Valley Duals

MARSHALL, Mo. — The Colby Trojans men's wrestling team competed at the Valley Duals on Friday (Jan. 9) in Marshall, MO. finishing the day with a 2–2 record after rebounding from early setbacks to close the event with back-to-back dual wins.
The Trojans opened the day against NAIA opponent Baker University, falling 33–23 in a hard-fought dual. Colby picked up early points with forfeits at 125 and 141 pounds, as Tate Blackwill and Tevin Jackson secured quick team points. Scotty Engle delivered one of the highlights of the dual at 149 pounds, earning a technical fall victory (16–0) to keep Colby within striking distance. Heavyweight Kevaun Jones also added six points with a fall at 285 pounds, but Baker capitalized with several falls through the middle and upper weights to secure the win.
Colby then faced another NAIA opponent, William Woods University, in its second dual of the day, dropping a close 30–24 decision. The Trojans once again started strong, with Tevin Jackson earning a forfeit at 125 pounds. Engle continued his dominant day at 149 pounds, pinning his opponent in just 1:15. Kash Alley added another pin for Colby at 197 pounds, while Jones closed the dual with a forfeit win at heavyweight. Despite the efforts, William Woods collected bonus points in several matches to narrowly edge the Trojans.
Colby responded in its third dual against NAIA Oklahoma Wesleyan with a commanding 40–12 victory. The Trojans won eight of the ten bouts, including forfeit wins for Tevin Jackson (125), Luis Vasquez (133), Ayden Wohlgemuth (184), and Robert Tatum (285). Engle continued his perfect day with a fall at 149 pounds, while Jovanny Arellanes (157) and Talon Suttles (141) each earned decision wins. Kash Alley added a major decision at 197 pounds as Colby controlled the dual from start to finish.
The Trojans closed the Valley Duals with a 29–22 win over NAIA university Midway, securing their second consecutive victory. Luis Vasquez and Talon Suttles opened the dual with back-to-back wins at 125 and 133 pounds, including a technical fall from Suttles. Engle once again set the tone at 149 pounds, recording a lightning fast pin in just 35 seconds. Robert Cazares earned a fall at 174 pounds, Gunner Owens picked up a forfeit at 184, and Robert Tatum sealed the dual with a sudden-victory win at heavyweight.
Scotty Engle led Colby on the day with four wins at 149 pounds, all coming via bonus points. The Trojans showed resilience throughout the event, improving as the day progressed and finishing the Valley Duals strong.
Colby will look to build on its late success as the season continues next Thursday (Jan. 15) with conference duals starting up. Thursday the team heads to Cowley for duals against Cowley and Labette.
