Trojans Men's Wrestling Takes on Jet Open Field Sunday
The Colby Trojans men’s wrestling team competed at the Jet Open on Sunday in Wichita, hosted by Newman University. The Trojans sent 14 wrestlers into the field and finished 10th out of 12 teams with 26.5 total points in a competitive tournament that featured a strong field of NCAA competition.
WICHITA, Kan. — The Colby Trojans men's wrestling team competed at the Jet Open on Sunday (Jan. 4) in Wichita, hosted by Newman University. The Trojans sent 14 wrestlers into the field and finished 10th out of 12 teams with 26.5 total points in a competitive tournament that featured a strong field of NCAA competition.
Several Trojans turned in notable individual performances throughout the day. Gunner Owens went 2-2, opening his tournament with back-to-back victories by fall before dropping his final two matches. Scotty Engle also finished 2-2, earning two wins by fall in his appearances. Talon Suttles finished 2-2 as well, earning a first-round bye before recording a fall victory and a major decision in his first two matches.
Kash Alley recorded a hard-fought 8-7 decision win over a Cowley wrestler, a fellow KJCCC opponent. Sebastian Rodriguez won his opening match before falling in his next two bouts. Luis Vasquez earned a shutout victory against a Barton opponent in his second match of the day. At heavyweight, Robert Tatum secured a win for the Trojans, while Kevaun Jones picked up a 9-3 decision victory but came up short in his other two matches.
While no Trojans placed at the event, the Jet Open provided valuable mat time as the team looks ahead to Friday (Jan. 9), when Colby will travel to Marshall, MO. to compete at the Missouri Valley Duals.
