The Trojans men's wrestling team gears up for one of the most demanding events on its early-season calendar this Sunday (Dec. 7) as the annual Bob Smith Open gets underway in Hays. Action begins at 8:30 a.m. across seven mats, with more than 340 wrestlers from 23 institutions entered, making this year's field the largest since 2016. For the Trojans, the event marks a key checkpoint in their development, offering a high-volume, high-caliber environment that will challenge both veterans and emerging contributors.
Colby enters the weekend riding several encouraging performances from last Saturday's (Nov. 29) Younes Hospitality Open in Kearney, where multiple Trojans advanced deep into their brackets and produced signature wins. The Trojans will bring a large and balanced roster focused on gaining experience at teh Bob Smith Open.
Colby will feature competitors across the lineup, including returning athletes who made strides last weekend, Talon Suttles and Savieon Garrison at 133, Hunter Smith-Velarde and Robert Cazares in a deep 157 group, Kash Alley at 184, and Robert Tatum and Kevaun Jones at heavyweight, along with a wide slate of developing wrestlers aiming to establish consistency and break through against a national-caliber field.
With a full roster entered, the Bob Smith Open provides Colby with another critical opportunity to measure progress and compete against one of the strongest collections of programs they will see all season.
