Gritty Lady Trojans come up short against Barton
Young CCC squad drops conference opener 57-52
The Colby Community College women's basketball team lost Saturday night at home to the Barton Community College Cougars, 57-52.
"The ladies should feel good about their performance," said head coach Antowin Edwards. "We just made a few costly mistakes down the stretch that allowed them to pull away for the win. With such a young team we are going to have moments like that because we are still searching for our identity as a team."
The Lady Trojans overcame a nine point halftime deficit and trimmed Barton's lead to 52-51 with five minutes to go, but only managed one point the rest of the game.
"I was very proud of how we fought all night," Edwards added. "I felt we played extremely hard and really got after them defensively."
Dezyree Morales led the Lady Trojans with 13 points and eight rebounds. CCC had the rebounding edge 50-47 and limited their second half turnovers to six.
"I believe we have to look for small victories right now because we basically have a brand new team. Holding our opponent under 60 points is a small win, and is one of our team goals on the season."
The Lady Trojans are 2-3 on the season and 0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. They are on the road Wednesday in Arkansas City for a 5:30 p.m. start against Cowley County Community College.
