MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Colby Trojans track and field teams wrapped up competition at the Ward Haylett last chance meet hosted by Kansas State Wildcats track and field with new school records and several NJCAA national qualifying marks as athletes made one final push before the national championships hosted Friday (May 8).
Leading the way for the Trojan men was Javano Bridgewater, who delivered one of the top sprint performances in program history by winning the 200 meters in a national qualifying time of 21.01. The mark not only earned first place in a loaded field but also secured another NJCAA national qualifying standard for the sophomore sprinter.
Bridgewater also helped power the men's 4x400-meter relay team to a huge performance later in the meet. Alongside Redith Stubbs, Leonardo Clement, and Irad Mixon, the Trojans finished third overall in 3:14.30, the fastest relay time by the team this season and now the third-fastest mark in school history. In the middle-distance events, Thomas Calas continued his strong season in the 800 meters, placing fifth overall with a national qualifying time of 1:52.82. The performance also moved him to fifth all-time in Colby program history.
The Trojans also saw strong depth performances in the sprint events. Walter Parker placed 10th in both the 100 meters (11.33) and 200 meters (22.37), while Stubbs, Clement, Harley McPherson, and Mixon all competed in the 400 meters. Stubbs led the group with a 12th-place finish in 49.32, followed closely by Clement in 13th at 49.97. McPherson placed 15th in 50.92, while Mixon finished 16th in 51.04.
In the field events, Colby produced another historic performance as Jared Cox broke the school record in the discus with a throw of 149-5 to finish ninth overall. The throw surpassed the previous program mark and added another highlight moment to an impressive outdoor season for the Trojan thrower.
Sumner Homolka turned in one of the top field event performances of the day for Colby, finishing runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 165-5. Deangelo Delancy added a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 40-11.50, while Tamario Petty placed 15th in the discus at 121-11.
On the women's side, Dekanya Webb delivered a record-breaking performance in the 100-meter hurdles. Webb finished third overall in 14.70 while setting a new school record in the event, continuing her breakout outdoor campaign with one of the top hurdle performances in program history.
The Ward Haylett Last Chance Meet served as the final opportunity for athletes to secure national qualifying marks and improve regional standings before the NJCAA Outdoor National Championships next week. With multiple qualifiers, record-breaking performances, and top-10 all-time marks, the Trojans head into nationals carrying strong momentum.
