Johnson, King, and Mitchell continue hoops careers
Men's basketball players Ahmad Johnson (Kennesaw State University), Tyrik King (York College), and Ronald Mitchell (Sam Houston State University) recently signed letters of intent to continue at the next level.
Johnson averaged 16.2 points per contest while shooting 36.2% from three-point range last season. The 6-foot-4 Punta Gorda, Fla., native started in 28 games and had eight games of 20 or more points, including a career-high of 30.
"Ahmad Johnson is a guy that we are ecstatic to add to our program," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Amir Abdur-Rahim. "A dynamic scorer that can score from all three levels. Ahmad has a high level of care about his development both on and off the court, which matches who we are as a program. We love who he is as a competitor but love who he is as a person even more."
The NCAA Division I KSU Owls in Kennesaw, Ga., participate in the ASUN Conference.
King will be headed to York, Neb., to play for the Division II Panthers, members of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). The 6-7 forward from Liberal played in all 30 games for the Trojans, averaging 2.6 points and two rebounds per contest.
Head Coach Tree Burks believes King's background aligns with the Panthers' philosophy.
"We are a program that places a huge importance on character, and Tyrik exemplifies being a man of character. He is a quality student-athlete that will fit our program and school perfectly. Tyrik will bring size, work ethic, toughness, and leadership to our squad, and we're excited to have him on our campus."
Mitchell averaged 18.8 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game in his one season with the Trojans. He also shot 82 percent from the line.
Sam Houston State Head Coach Jason Hooten looks forward to having the 6-3 guard from Philadelphia on his team.
"Ron will give us tremendous depth, competition, and scoring from the guard position that we haven't had in a long time," Hooten said. "He is an explosive scorer from many different levels and a very capable lockdown defender."
