"A tale of two halves" as Trojans top Dodge
CCC overcomes 14-point deficit to win 85-76.
The Colby Community College men's basketball team dug out of a 14-point first half hole to beat the Dodge City Conquistadors 85-76 Wednesday night at the Colby Community Building.
"This game was a tale of two halves for us," said Trojans head coach Rusty Grafel. "We played well enough at the end of the first half to be down two. But the second half was more of the way we have been playing to where we can win games."
Colby trailed 40-26 before closing the first half on a 16-4 run. After several ties and lead changes, the Trojans were able to hold off a late charge by Dodge by knocking down free throws. For the game CCC shot 71 percent from the line (22-31).
Three Trojans scored in double figures, led by 25 from Gabriel Gyamfi. Drew Young poured in 20 and Shaq Athie had 13.
Grafel was especially pleased with his team's ability to get key stops against Dodge's high-powered offense.
"Holding them to 32 points in the second half and getting some tough defensive possessions to help our offense is when we can really be a special team," Grafel said. "I thought Drew had one of his better over all games. He played well on both ends of the floor. Gabe has continued to play well for us and we expect him to continue that!"
The Trojans improve their record to 6-12 in the Jayhawk Conference and 10-12 overall. Saturday they are in Hutchinson to take on the No. 6 Blue Dragons (17-1, 21-1). Game time is 7:30 p.m.
