Colby falls 81-72 after slow second half
The Colby Community College men's basketball team dropped their conference home opener Saturday night to the Barton Community College Cougars, 82-71.
The Trojans trailed by three at halftime but fell behind by as many as 18 in the second half. Each time Colby edged closer Barton responded.
"In all, I thought we played 20 minutes of good basketball," said Trojans head coach Rusty Grafel. They answered every one of our runs and defensively we weren't tough enough. We have to continue to get better as we move towards our next game on Wednesday."
Despite early foul trouble, CCC freshman Shaq Athie led the Trojans with 16 points and seven rebounds, while David Hall added 13 points and Caleal Walker chipped in 11.
The loss drops the Trojans to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the Jayhawk Conference. Wednesday they open their conference road schedule in Arkansas City against Cowley County Community College. Tip-off is 7:30 p.m.
