Colby baseball heads into a pivotal four-game conference series this week against Garden City, with positioning in the KJCCC standings on the line. The Broncbusters enter the matchup at 17–25 (8–12 KJCCC), holding a narrow one-game lead over the Trojans, who come in at 14–28 (7–17 KJCCC).
The series begins Thursday (April 16) in Garden City before shifting back to Colby on Saturday (April 18) to wrap up the four-game set.
Colby enters the series looking to build momentum after splitting a series with Pratt and coming off a midweek loss at McCook. Despite the recent result, the Trojans have established themselves as one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the conference.
As a team, Colby is hitting .308 with a strong .414 on-base percentage and a .513 slugging percentage. The Trojans have also shown plenty of power, launching 61 home runs this season, ranking among the top teams in the conference.
Caden Clifford has been a steady force in the middle of the lineup, leading the team with a .343 batting average while consistently producing in key moments. Turner Zdunich has emerged as one of the most complete hitters on the roster, batting .328 while leading the team in RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Zdunich also tops the Trojans with 10 home runs and has drawn 27 walks, highlighting his discipline at the plate. Overall, Colby's lineup has been balanced, with seven players driving in more than 20 runs this season.
On the mound, the Trojans are coming off one of their strongest individual performances of the year, as Rory MacDonald tossed a complete game in a win over Seward County. Out of the bullpen, Dallen Rude has been a reliable late-inning arm and is currently tied for the conference lead with three saves.
Garden City presents a tough challenge with an offense that mirrors Colby's production. The Broncbusters are hitting .310 as a team with 64 home runs, creating one of the most explosive lineups in the conference.
Sean Togher leads Garden City, and ranks among the top hitters in the conference, with a .438 batting average, while also pacing the team with 12 home runs. Sean Philpotts is close behind at .436, giving the Broncbusters a formidable one-two punch at the plate. Mason Tafoya adds even more power with 10 home runs, and the lineup features multiple players with more than 20 extra-base hits.
On the pitching side, Garden City relies on a trio of starters in Togher, Kaige Kennedy, and Walker Maximick, who have all logged significant innings and maintained solid ERAs, giving the Broncbusters consistency on the mound.
With both teams boasting high-powered offenses and separated by just one game in the standings, the series could prove to be a turning point in the conference race as the regular season begins to wind down.
