The Colby baseball team enters a pivotal stretch of the season with a full slate of games ahead, beginning with a non-conference doubleheader on the road against Otero on Tuesday (April 7) before returning to conference play later in the week.
Colby comes into the week with a 12-23 (5-15 KJCCC), but recent performances suggest a team continuing to trend upward. After securing a series win over Barton, the Trojans split their most recent series against Seward County.
Offensively, Colby has been one of the more dangerous lineups in the conference. The Trojans are hitting .309 as a team with a .420 on-base percentage and a .529 slugging percentage. Their 56 home runs rank sixth in the conference. The Trojans are led by Callum Thomson, who paces the team with a .346 batting average and continues to be a consistent presence at the top of the lineup.
Close behind is Turner Zdunich, who is one of the team's most complete offensive threats. Zdunich is hitting .333 while leading the team in RBIs, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. He has also shown strong plate discipline with 25 walks on the season. Both Thomson and Zdunich have hit nine home runs and added six doubles, anchoring a lineup that features depth throughout. In total, six different Trojans have driven in more than 20 runs this season, underscoring the team's balanced offensive production.
On the mound, Colby is coming off its most impressive individual performances of the season. Rory MacDonald delivered a complete game victory against Seward County, throwing all seven innings and setting the tone with his command. Out of the bullpen, Dallen Rude has been a key late-inning option and is currently tied for the conference lead in saves with three.
Otero enters the matchup with a 10-22 overall record and has recently begun conference play, where they currently sit at .500. Offensively, they are led by Julian Duran, who is hitting .324 on the season. Otero also features multiple run producers, with four players recording over 20 RBIs, including Keita Fujino, who leads the team with 23 RBIs. On the mound, freshman Ty Reed has been a key contributor, holding a 2-2 record over 22 innings pitched.
The Trojans will then turn their attention to conference opponent Pratt, who enters the week with a 2-14 record in KJCCC play. Despite their record, Pratt features a standout offensive performer in freshman Owen Schmidt. Schmidt is hitting .350 and leads the team with 28 RBIs, including 12 extra-base hits, five home runs, and two triples. He is joined by two additional hitters batting over .300, both of whom share the team lead in home runs with six, giving Pratt the ability to generate offense when timely hits come together.
With a strong offensive foundation and signs of growth on the mound, the Trojans have an opportunity to build momentum during a critical point in the season.
